Lake Agassiz Habitat For Humanity Receives Grant for 2015 Community Build

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

The 2015 Community Build was a Habitat Home built alongside and for a single mom and her daughter. Before this home, they were living in a rental that was unsafe and unhealthy. The daughter, suffering from asthma, had to go to the doctor many times due to mold in their home. With few affordable options, however, they were forced to stay.

Their new home is helping them to be healthy, safe and have hope for the future. Owning their home, with affordable mortgage payments, is helping this family thrive. The mom now can return to school to obtain a better paying job, and the daughter has a stable place to study and allows them to save for the future.

Since Habitat is built on giving families a hand up, not a hand out, the grant will ultimately be matched by the partner family as they repay the cost of construction through a 30-year, 0% mortgage. The mom put in more than 250 hours of sweat equity, a requirement for partner families. The $2,000 grant was used to purchase building materials.
