Anne Krapu-HPR Journalism Non-Endowed Scholarship Fund

We are not accepting applications this year.

Madeline Luke and Gary Krapu of Valley City and the High Plains Reader are pleased to announce the creation of the Anne Krapu-HPR Journalism Scholarship. Annually, the Fund will award financial and mentoring support to 1-2 young writers who are interested in becoming journalists.

The High Plains Reader is a Fargo-Moorhead area paper which has published weekly for 24 years. The HPR, owned by John Strand and Raul Gomez, has been an independent voice reporting on the arts, local politics, entertainment, and commentary on national and international issues.

Anne Krapu began her writing career at age 16 with a weekly column for the Valley City Times Record covering popular culture, politics, and social justice issues. She continued writing on these subjects, publishing in the HPR, Matador, and the Say Anything blog while traveling throughout the world as a teacher and working as a political campaign staffer. She died unexpectedly in January 2018 at the age of 31.

Now, more than ever, Anne’s family and the HPR want to support North Dakotans aged 15-25 who wish to learn the skills necessary to report honestly, fearlessly, and for the benefit of all the reading public.

Show your support

For over 60 years, the FM Area Foundation has worked hand in hand with individuals, families, businesses, professional advisors, and nonprofits to create funds that support our community. We manage more than 500 charitable funds, each with specific objectives or catering to the community’s most pressing needs.

You have the power to make a positive impact in two ways. You can donate to one of our existing funds, or you can contact us to create a charitable fund that matches your values. Whichever route you choose, we are humbled by your trust and grateful for your kindness and generosity.

“We wanted the scholarship to live on as a legacy for Norman and I in our communities to encourage a young person as they seek their dreams.”

Agnes Liudahl Donor

"We established a donor-advised fund to consolidate assets that will be used for charitable purposes. Doing so has management and tax advantages that make our dollars go further in helping others.”

Ron & Nancy Saeger Donor

“Given charitable giving impacts everything - investment planning, taxes, and estate planning, a holistic approach where someone understands the big picture is often helpful.”

This ripple of kindness is cultivating joy and shared connection in our community, just because, and only made possible through generous donors. What a beautiful gift to know your community cares about you!”
