Community foundations are able to accomplish a great number of things over time through traditional investments and endowment funds. Recently, the FM Area Foundation has begun a new initiative called impact investing, where investments are made into organizations, projects or funds with the specific intention to create a positive social impact alongside a financial return. The dollars would ultimately be recycled time and time again.
One example of impact investing is buying bonds in a local housing project. While the financial rate of return is not as high as traditional funds, there is an additional non-monetary return in the form of social good.
