Timothy J. Beaton believed philanthropy had the power to transform communities.
As Executive Director of the FM Area Foundation from 2010 to 2020, Tim inspired donors, community leaders and partners to think beyond today’s needs and invest in a stronger future for the Fargo-Moorhead region.
Under Tim’s leadership, the Foundation experienced extraordinary growth, increasing from approximately $50 million to more than $100 million in assets under management. That growth expanded the Foundation’s ability to connect generosity with opportunity, supporting nonprofit organizations and helping donors create lasting impact across our region.
Tim’s vision extended beyond the Foundation itself. He led the campaign to establish the Foundation’s permanent home across from Island Park, a place designed to bring together donors, nonprofits and community members united by a shared commitment to philanthropy.
A passionate advocate for community development, Tim believed the community foundation could be a catalyst for innovative solutions. He helped launch the Foundation’s impact investing program, supported the collaborative effort that evolved into Downtown Moorhead Inc., and founded the Cass Clay Community Land Trust, which continues to create pathways to affordable homeownership throughout the region. These initiatives reflect his belief that charitable giving should not only respond to today’s challenges but also create opportunities for generations to come.
Those who knew Tim remember more than his accomplishments. They remember his vision, his enthusiasm, his genuine love for this community, and his ability to connect people around bold ideas. With optimism, curiosity and a memorable sense of humor, Tim inspired others to imagine what was possible.
Today, the FM Area Foundation continues to build on the foundation Tim helped strengthen. In recognition of his extraordinary leadership and lasting impact, the FM Area Foundation’s lobby will be dedicated in his honor.

There will be a lobby dedication for Tim at the Foundation office (409 7th St. S, Fargo) on August 11, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
